If you are wondering how to get from Prague to Karlovy Vary for a day trip or a relaxing weekend getaway, you have three main choices: express bus, train, or direct airport transfer. But not all routes are created equal! This simple transport guide compares travel times, ticket prices, and exact platform locations so you can choose the absolute best option for your trip.
🚌 1. Express Bus from Prague to Karlovy Vary (Fastest & Cheapest)
For most travelers, the direct bus is the best choice. It is fast, cheap, and very comfortable.
Quick Facts:
- Main Operators: RegioJet and FlixBus
- Where it leaves in Prague: ÚAN Florenc (The Central Bus Station – Metro lines B and C)
- Where to get off: Karlovy Vary, Tržnice (Get off here! This stop is right next to the city center)
- Travel Time: 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes
- Ticket Cost: €6 to €12 (150–300 CZK)

💰 Money Saving Tip: Bus companies use dynamic pricing (tickets get expensive when the bus fills up). Try to book a few days in advance. Also, avoid Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. Many local Czech students travel between Prague and Karlovy Vary at these times, so buses sell out fast.
↩️ How to Get Back: Bus from Karlovy Vary to Prague
Pay close attention to where you catch your bus back to Prague. The express buses use a one-way system inside the city. While they let you off at Tržnice when you arrive, no express buses pick up passengers at Tržnice for the return trip. To go back to Prague, you must catch your bus at the main station: Karlovy Vary, Dolní nádraží (Bus Terminal).
🚶♂️ Walking Route to the Bus Terminal
Do not waste time or money looking for city public transport. The walk between the two stations is very short and simple:
- Walk toward the Jan Becher (Becherovka) Museum.
- Right nearby, go down into the underground pedestrian underpass.
- Turn left inside the underpass.
- Walk out, and in about 50 to 100 meters, you will see the modern Dolní nádraží Bus Terminal right in front of you.

🚉 Finding Your Prague Platform
Once you arrive at the Dolní nádraží terminal, finding your bus is simple:
- FlixBus: Usually departs from Platform 1. This platform is located right next to the main station building’s automatic glass doors.
- RegioJet: Usually departs from the island platforms directly across from Platform 1 (usually Platform 11—always check the electronic departure screens to be sure).

ℹ️ Note: You might see a local suburban bus (PID Line 305) leaving from smaller transit stops toward Prague Zličín. Do not take it. It stops in every single small village along the way and takes much longer than the express buses.
✈️ 2. Direct Bus from Prague Airport to Karlovy Vary
If you are flying into Prague and want to go straight to the spa town, you do not need to travel into the Prague city center. You can catch a direct express bus right from the airport.
Quick Facts:
- Main Operators: RegioJet and FlixBus
- Frequency: Highly frequent! Buses depart every 30 to 60 minutes.
- Travel Time: Only 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Ticket Cost: €7 to €14 (180–350 CZK).
📍 Where is the Airport Bus Stop?
Finding the platform is very simple because the long-distance bus station sits right between the terminals under a large, protective concrete roof.

Instead of searching for a specific terminal exit, just follow the airport signs for “Parking” or the “Courtyard by Marriott” hotel:
- From Terminal 1: Walk out of the exit doors and head straight across the pedestrian crossings toward the covered transit platforms in front of the parking building (about an 80-meter walk).
- From Terminal 2: You do not need to walk all the way to Terminal 1 inside. Simply follow the indoor walking routes toward the parking structures. You will cross through the covered parking area, and the bus platforms will be right there under the roof, directly opposite the Marriott hotel complex.
Once you reach the covered platform area, look for the designated boarding bays displaying the bright yellow RegioJet or green FlixBus signs.
If you choose not to take the direct bus to Karlovy Vary and need to head into Prague city center first, make sure to read our Prague airport transport guide for the best ways to navigate the arrivals terminal and reach the city.
🚂 3. From Prague to Karlovy Vary by Train (Scenic but Slow)
Traveling by train takes much longer than the bus. Most routes leave from Prague Main Station (Praha hlavní nádraží) and take a long, winding northern path through the countryside.
Quick Facts:
- Where it leaves: Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Station)
- Where it arrives: Karlovy Vary, horní nádraží (The upper train station)
- Travel Time: 3.5 to 4 hours
- Ticket Cost: €12 to €20 (300–500 CZK)
If you choose to take the train, it helps to understand how the system works. Read our complete Czech train travel guide for booking tips, and find out how to use Czech train discounts to save up to 50% on your tickets.
⚠️ Crucial Warning: Arriving at the Upper Station (Horní nádraží)
If you choose the train, keep in mind that Horní nádraží is not located near the city center or the spa zone.

* Walking: Walking to the center takes about 30 minutes. It is a long walk, and it is not recommended if you are carrying heavy luggage or traveling with children.
- Getting to the Center: Right outside the train station, you will find a local transit bus stop. It features a modern electronic display board that shows exactly which bus lines are coming and how many minutes until they arrive. You can easily catch a quick city bus down into the center, or grab a taxi waiting directly outside the station doors.
Why choose the train?
Even though it is slow and requires a bus ride at the end, some travelers still prefer it because:
- The Views: The train route is highly scenic and shows you beautiful parts of the Czech countryside and rivers.
- Onboard Comfort: Trains have big tables, power sockets for laptops, and working toilets. If you travel with very heavy suitcases, a train can feel much more spacious than a packed express bus.
If you choose the train, buy your ticket on the Můj Vlak (ČD) app or IDOS website, and make sure to select a free seat reservation. For more helpful tools to download before your trip, check out our list of useful apps for tourists in the Czech Republic.
