How to Use Intercity Buses in the Czech Republic

Intercity buses in the Czech Republic are a useful way to travel between cities. A direct bus is often faster or more convenient than the train. However, these long-distance coaches work differently from Prague public transport and regional buses.

You normally buy a ticket for a particular departure, board at the stop printed on the ticket and place large luggage in the compartment under the bus. This guide explains the complete process, from finding a connection to getting off at your destination.

What Counts as an Intercity Bus in Czechia?

In this guide, intercity buses means long-distance coaches connecting cities in different parts of Czechia, usually across regional boundaries. These include services operated by companies such as RegioJet and FlixBus.

An intercity ticket is usually valid for:

  • a particular operator;
  • a particular date and departure time;
  • the departure and arrival stops shown on the ticket;
  • one specific journey, unless the ticket conditions say otherwise.

These buses use the operator’s own tickets and prices. A Prague public transport ticket or a regional zone ticket is not normally valid on them.

This article does not cover local and regional buses. Those services have different tickets and rules, which I explain in my guide to traveling by regional bus in the Czech Republic explains which option may be faster, cheaper or more convenient.

Which Companies Operate Intercity Buses in the Czech Republic?

RegioJet and FlixBus are the two companies visitors are most likely to see on popular routes. Other operators also serve particular cities and regions, so the available company depends on the journey. Do not choose only by the color of the bus or the company name. First compare:

  • the departure and arrival stops;
  • whether the journey is direct;
  • the departure time and journey time;
  • the ticket price.

On many routes, the practical differences between operators are small. The best option is often simply the direct bus that leaves from the most convenient stop at the right time.
If your route is also served by rail, my train vs. bus comparison for traveling around the Czech Republic explains which option may be faster, cheaper or more convenient.

How to Find an Intercity Bus Connection

IDOS is useful for comparing buses and trains in one search. Enter the exact travel date and check the full journey details, not only the departure time.

IDOS may show long-distance coaches, regional buses and trains together. Look at the operator’s name, the list of stops and any transfer symbols before choosing.

After finding a suitable bus, I recommend checking the same connection on the operator’s website or app. You can then see the current price, available seats, luggage options and ticket conditions.

How to Choose the Correct Connection

A city can have several bus stations and roadside stops. Two buses traveling to the same city may leave from different parts of Prague or arrive at different places at the destination.

Before paying, check all of the following:

  • the full name of the departure stop;
  • the full name of the arrival stop;
  • whether the route is direct;
  • the number and length of any connections;
  • the scheduled arrival time;
  • the operator’s name.

Do not assume that a ticket showing “Prague” is valid from any Prague stop. The specific boarding point matters. My Prague to Karlovy Vary transport guide provides a practical example: buses leave from different places in Prague and use two different stops in Karlovy Vary.

Where Should You Buy the Ticket?

The simplest option is to buy directly from the bus operator’s website or app. This usually makes it easier to find the booking, receive delay information and manage a change or cancellation.

Travel websites and ticket resellers may also sell the same connection. If you use one, check whether changes must be handled through the reseller rather than the bus company.

Can You Buy a Ticket from the Driver?

Sometimes you can buy a ticket from the driver if the bus has an empty seat. Card payment may be available, but the accepted payment methods can depend on the operator and vehicle.

This is a backup option, not a reliable plan. A busy bus may be full, and passengers with bookings have priority. Buying in advance is especially important on Friday afternoons, weekends, holidays and around major events.

Do You Need to Print an Intercity Bus Ticket?

For online RegioJet and FlixBus bookings, you can normally show the ticket or QR code on your phone. A printed copy is usually unnecessary.

Download the ticket before leaving your accommodation. At some stations, mobile data can be weak, and searching through email while people are boarding creates unnecessary stress. Keep your phone charged and increase the screen brightness if the code is difficult to scan.

There is no ticket-validation machine on these coaches. The driver or another staff member checks your ticket before you board.

Carry the identification or discount document required by your booking. For an international journey, also carry the travel document required for crossing the border.

Are Seats Reserved on Czech Intercity Buses?

When you buy an intercity bus ticket, you reserve a place on that particular departure. However, RegioJet and FlixBus have different rules for choosing a specific seat.

RegioJet normally includes seat selection in the ticket price. FlixBus charges for choosing a particular seat, with the fee depending on the seat category and journey distance.

RegioJet Seat Reservations

RegioJet lets you choose an available seat during booking. On domestic routes, selecting an ordinary seat is normally included in the ticket price. Your selected seat number will appear on the ticket.

FlixBus Seat Reservations

A FlixBus ticket guarantees you a place on the bus, but choosing a particular seat normally costs extra. The reservation fee depends on the seat category and the distance of the journey. The current price is displayed during booking.

If you do not pay to select a seat, check your ticket first. FlixBus may assign a seat automatically. If a seat number appears on the ticket, you should use that seat.

If no seat number is shown, you can choose an available non-reserved seat. On many buses, these seats have a green square or sticker above them.

Do not sit in a seat marked Obsazeno, which means “occupied” or “reserved.” The same notice may also appear in English as Reserved or Occupied. Remember that an empty seat may be reserved for a passenger boarding at a later stop. If the seat markings are unclear, ask the driver before sitting down.

Current seat reservation rules are explained in the FlixBus seat-reservation rules.

How to Find the Correct Bus Stop and Platform

First go to the exact stop printed on your ticket. Do not go only to the city’s main bus station and assume your coach will leave from there.

At a larger station, check the departure board for the destination, operator, departure time and platform. Platforms can occasionally change, so check the board again shortly before boarding.

These Czech words may help:

Czech termMeaning
autobusové nádraží or aut. nádr.bus station
ÚANcentral bus station
stanovištěbay or stand
nástupištěplatform
zastávkabus stop

RegioJet and FlixBus may use nearby but separate stops. Check the sign, operator name and destination rather than joining the longest queue.

How Boarding an Intercity Bus Works

Try to arrive 10–15 minutes before departure. Large stations can be confusing, and the bus will not wait for a passenger who is standing at the wrong platform.

On RegioJet and many FlixBus coaches used in Czechia, passengers normally enter and leave through the second door in the middle of the bus.

When the bus arrives, the driver normally leaves the cabin and walks to the middle door. The driver checks tickets there, usually by scanning the QR code on each passenger’s phone.

The usual boarding order is:

  1. Check the destination, departure time and operator displayed on the bus.
  2. Stand back and allow arriving passengers to leave through the middle door.
  3. Place your suitcase in the compartment indicated by the driver.
  4. Join the line at the middle door and prepare your ticket on your phone.
  5. Show the QR code to the driver for scanning.
  6. Enter through the middle door and find the seat shown on your ticket.
  7. Fasten your seat belt before departure.

Do not wait beside the front door unless the driver directs you there. The exact procedure can vary slightly depending on the vehicle, so follow the driver’s instructions.

At your destination, leave through the same middle door. If you have luggage under the bus, wait until the driver opens the compartment before collecting it.

Does the Bus Stop at Every Place on Its Route?

Intercity coaches follow a fixed timetable and a published list of stops. They call at those scheduled stops; they are not request stops, and you do not press a button to make the driver stop.

The driver may still stop when nobody on board is getting off because passengers without advance tickets could be waiting to ask for an available seat.

If you want to leave the bus briefly during a longer stop, first ask the driver how much time you have. Many intermediate stops are only long enough for passengers to board and leave.

Can You Board at a Different Stop?

Use the departure point printed on your ticket. Do not buy a ticket from one station and simply join the same bus at a later stop.

The driver checks bookings at each boarding point, and operator rules may treat you as a no-show if you do not board where booked. If your plans change, update the ticket first or contact the operator.

The same principle applies to your destination: check where the bus will leave you before booking. The terminal may be some distance from the historical center or your hotel.

The departure point is particularly important when taking a direct bus from Prague Airport to Karlovy Vary. A ticket from central Prague does not normally allow you to join the same bus at the airport.

Luggage on Czech Intercity Buses

Small hand luggage normally stays with you, while larger suitcases go into the luggage compartment under the bus. The number, size and weight of included bags depend on the operator and ticket.

RegioJet and FlixBus booking screens showing standard, additional and special luggage options for intercity buses.
Check the luggage allowance during booking. Both RegioJet and FlixBus let passengers add extra or special luggage, including bicycles, skis and snowboards.

Both RegioJet and FlixBus include a basic luggage allowance, but the limits are not identical. Check the allowance displayed for your particular journey before paying.

  • With RegioJet, one standard luggage place is normally included with each ticket. You must add excess luggage, another large bag or a special item during booking.
  • FlixBus normally includes one small bag or backpack and one larger suitcase. The permitted weight and dimensions are displayed during booking.

Both companies charge for additional or special luggage. The fee depends on the operator, route and type of item. Bicycles, skis, snowboards and oversized bags may require a separate reservation. Space under the bus is limited, so the driver may refuse an oversized or unregistered item.

What About Backpacks, Bicycles and Large Items?

A normal backpack is usually treated as hand luggage if it fits within the operator’s limits and can be stored safely. A large hiking backpack may count as hold luggage.

Bicycles, skis, musical instruments and other unusual items have separate rules. Some services require an advance reservation, while others cannot carry them at all. Check the particular departure before buying your passenger ticket.

Are There Toilets, Wi-Fi and Power Outlets?

Many long-distance coaches have a toilet, Wi-Fi and power outlets or USB ports. RegioJet may also offer drinks or onboard service on some routes.

However, amenities depend on the bus and service. Wi-Fi may be slow, a socket may not work and a toilet can occasionally be unavailable. Bring water, charge your phone before departure and do not plan an important online task around the advertised Wi-Fi.

Can You Change or Cancel the Ticket?

Change and cancellation conditions vary by operator, ticket type and time remaining before departure. Read the conditions before paying, particularly if you are connecting from a flight or another separately booked service.

An operator may return money, issue a voucher, charge a fee or provide no refund, depending on the booking. If you bought through a reseller, you may need to manage the booking through that company.

Do not wait until the scheduled departure time if you already know you will miss the bus. Open the booking immediately and check whether you can change or cancel it before the deadline.

Missing one bus does not normally allow you to use the same ticket on the next departure.

What If the Bus Is Delayed?

Road traffic, construction and weather can delay an intercity bus. Follow the journey in the operator’s app or use the tracking link provided with your booking when available.

Leave a realistic margin before a separately booked train, flight, tour or another bus. If the tickets were bought separately, the next company is unlikely to protect your connection because the first bus was late.

At an unfamiliar station, allow additional time to find the next platform. A connection that looks possible in the timetable may feel very short when you also need to collect a suitcase from under the bus.

Traveling with Children, Pets or Reduced Mobility

Check the operator’s rules before booking if you are traveling with a child, animal or mobility equipment.

  • Children: Select the correct passenger age during booking and check the operator’s rules for child seats and unaccompanied minors.
  • Pets: Rules differ by company, route and type of animal. Do not assume a pet can travel simply because it fits in a carrier.
  • Wheelchairs and mobility assistance: Contact the operator in advance. The available space and assistance depend on the vehicle and stop.
  • Strollers: Check whether the stroller must be folded and whether it counts toward the luggage allowance.

These arrangements are easier to solve before the travel date than at the bus door.

Intercity Bus Checklist

Before leaving, confirm that you have:

  • booked the correct date and direction;
  • checked the exact departure and arrival stops;
  • confirmed whether the route is direct;
  • read the luggage allowance;
  • downloaded the ticket to your phone;
  • checked the seat number and platform information;
  • allowed enough time for any separate connection;
  • arrived at the stop 10–15 minutes early.

Once you understand the difference between a long-distance coach and a regional bus, traveling by intercity bus in Czechia is straightforward. The most important details are the ones printed on your ticket: the operator, departure time, exact boarding point and destination stop.
