Csatle Křivoklát Short History

Castle Krivoklat - residence of kings
Krivoklat Castle situated in the top of a hill and surrounded with the thick walls

The castle was used as a royal residence for many centuries. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the building became a state prison. It is easy to see why—it sits on top of a high hill and is surrounded by thick walls. In 1733, the castle passed to the Fürstenberg family. Today, it is managed by the Czech National Heritage Institute.

Actually, in a place like this, I wonder about two things. First, how were people able to create such beautiful things using only basic tools? Second, I am surprised by how small these “great royal castles” actually are. If the king’s rooms were this small, how did “usual” people live? Did they live in only 2 square meters?

Visiting this fortress is one of the best ideas for a one-day trip from Prague. The fastest way to get there is by car (about 45 minutes). However, using public transport is a very scenic experience and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

💡Tips for a Smooth Trip to Castle Krivoklat

  • The Zličín Shortcut: If you are staying near the Yellow Metro Line (B), go to Zličín. Take Bus 380 or 384 to Beroun and then to a train or another bus to Castle Krivoklat. It is a fast ride and often costs less.
  • Mastering the Beroun Transfer: Beroun is the main station for this trip. Look for the local S75 line toward Rakovník.
    • Quick Tip: These trains often leave from smaller platforms (like Platform 1A). Give yourself 10–15 minutes to find the platform so you don’t have to run!
  • The Best App: Use the PID Lítačka or IDOS apps. They show real-time platforms and delays. You can buy a 7-zone ticket (valid for 3 hours) in the Lítačka app. Remember to activate it before you board!
  • Choose the Scenic Path: When you arrive at the Křivoklát railway station, my advice is to avoid the main road. Instead, look for the yellow-marked hiking trail or the wooden bridge. If you take this path, you will get a beautiful first view of the castle through the trees.
  • The Weekend Express: On Saturdays and Sundays, look for the “Rakovnický rychlík.” This is a vintage direct train. It is very comfortable and feels like traveling back in time.
  • Don’t Miss the Last Train: Late-evening service is limited. Check the “Můj vlak” or IDOS app for the return schedule so you don’t get stuck in the dark forest!
